Jakarta (beritajatim.id) – PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI) has been recognized for its consistent commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, earning the prestigious Katadata Green Initiative Awards (KGIA) 2024. One notable initiative is BSI’s partnership with Plasticpay since July 2021, encouraging the reduction of plastic waste.
As of June 2024, BSI’s collaboration with Plasticpay has resulted in 82 collection points through Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs), successfully collecting and recycling 33.33 tons of plastic bottles, equivalent to 1.8 million bottles. This initiative has involved 17,462 participants, with 141,493 transactions recorded, reducing carbon emissions by 176.5 million grams and saving 28,164.47 square meters of land.
The plastic waste collected is transformed into useful products, reinforcing BSI’s commitment to ESG. BSI’s CEO, Hery Gunardi, emphasized the bank’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “Through our sustainability movement, we aim to inspire more people to take part in preserving our planet. Our partnership with Plasticpay raises awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste.”
The KGIA 2024 awards, part of the Katadata Sustainability Action for The Future Economy (SAFE) 2024 event, honored companies contributing to environmental sustainability. The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at the Grand Ballroom, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta.
BSI’s sustainability efforts extend beyond waste management. The bank also promotes tree planting initiatives and supports the preservation of endangered species, such as sea turtles. In sustainable financing, BSI achieved significant milestones, with sustainable financing reaching IDR 59.2 trillion by March 2024, aligning with Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060.
BSI allocated IDR 12.6 trillion to sustainable business activities, including eco-friendly products, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and other green initiatives. BSI also issued an oversubscribed Sustainability Sukuk of IDR 9 trillion.
Additionally, BSI has implemented various eco-friendly operational practices, such as building green structures, installing solar panels, and using electric vehicles. The bank also actively distributes zakat, reaching IDR 489 billion by March 2024, reflecting a 16.41% increase from the previous year.
Hery highlighted that BSI’s operations are guided by Maqashid Syariah principles, aligning with the sustainability framework of profit, people, and planet. This approach underpins BSI’s commitment to sustainable banking, sustainable operations, and sustainability beyond banking.
